4 has better gameplay, 3 has better narrative, quests, rpg mechanics, and imo a better world design and location designs. ps: 3 has overall better npcs but 4 has better companions. Play 4 first, then New Vegas then 3. 3 is one of the best games ever made. 4 just has smoother gameplay and prettier graphics. Fallout 4 did a great deal to address this issue, but modders have done a fantastic job updating Fallout: New Vegas's animations as well. I prefer New Vegas, but if you like New Vegas you'll probably also like 3. Even then, I'd play 3 first so I could enjoy even more the improvements you'll see in New Vegas.

BY FAR. People may hate me for saying this but Fallout 3 is a hotmess of game whos mods dont make the game any better.
