On PC, the quick menu is brought up with X, and the common things I do are switching multi-tools, switching secondary weapons, switching starship to 3rd person, and scanning for trading outposts. Just bound all these to hotkeys 1-5 and now it's so easy to do those things.
Character stays in first person mode even after I stop using the multitool and only goes back to third person when I run/use the jetpack/enter my ship.
